That “snacky” feeling, it’s back again! The desire to snack has been one of the most challenging moments of temptation to power through for the 20 days of Whole30 that I now have behind me. It’s the feeling of breaking a routine as well as fighting hunger.
Most days, when I open the coffeeshop and get done with work around 2 p.m, I head home and sit down and snack on something to help myself relax and put some more time in between when I would have to shell out the energy to cook an actual meal. This mid-afternoon satiation has been hard to stave off. Nuts, combined with some fruit or an avocado, have made for a satisfying mid-afternoon or morning snack.
The nuts as well as the avocado have lots of great fats and have helped me to feel full when I get that “snacky” craving! I made a simple and delicious mix of nuts flavored with some spices and orange zest that have made snacking more exciting as well as downright delicious while staying Whole30 compliant!
Mixed Nuts with Aleppo, Smoked Paprika and Orange
- 4 cups mixed nuts, excluding peanuts or anything roasted in peanut oil, I used cashews, almonds, pepitas and pecans
- 2 tablespoons ghee
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon aleppo pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried, crushed Mexican oregano
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
In a small pot over medium heat, add the ghee and melt. Stir in the spices and let toast in the ghee about one minute.
In a large bowl, combine all the nuts and seeds. Pour over the ghee and stir to coat. Season with salt to taste. Pour onto a baking sheet in an even layer and toast in the oven until golden brown and fragrant, about eight minutes. Let cool and enjoy!
